Art of the Novella

Explore the novella with four authors whose work spans the potential of the form. Moderated by Stacy D. Flood, a Seattle-area author and playwright who teaches the Art of the Novella course for Hugo House, this panel will explore innovative structures in novella writing, how form can shape material, and the advantages of the novella for authors and readers alike.

Moderator: Stacy D. Flood

Originally from Buffalo, and currently living in Seattle, Stacy D. Flood's work has been published nationally, and performed on stages nationwide as well as in the Puget Sound Area. He has been a DISQUIET scholar in Lisbon, an artist-in-residence at Millay Arts, and the recipient of a Getty Fellowship to the Squaw Valley Community of Writers.

Jayinee Basu

Born in Kolkata and based in Oakland, Jayinee Basu is the author of a book of poems entitled Asuras (Civil Coping Mechanisms 2014). She has written about art, illness, and science for a variety of publications, and her work has been translated into Spanish and Bengali. She has aided research on neurodegenerative disorders, co-authored papers on traumatic brain injury, and is an advocate for structural competency in medical education.

Kayla Chenault

Kayla Chenault is a practitioner of Black Girl Magic and holds a Master's in Creative Writing from Eastern Michigan University. When she is not writing, Kayla is found at the museums where she works or telling everybody about the history of popular music and social dance. She is a former line editor and contributing writer for Cecile's Writers. Her previous work can be found in The Blue Pages Journal and Honey and Lime literary magazine.

Jessica Lévai

Jessica Lévai has loved stories and storytellers for as long as she can remember. After a PhD in Egyptology and eight years as a professor of Anthropology, she dedicated herself to writing full time. She lives near Boston with her husband and two kids.
